Why The ‘Loki’ Season 2 Finale Was A Relief For Tom Hiddleston
Were fans the only ones to cry at the finale of Loki? Tom Hiddleston recently spoke about how he felt filming the end of his Marvel series.
Loki was one of the most satisfying projects for longtime Marvel fans. The series saw Tom Hiddleston truly flex his acting muscles at the God of Mischief, ending with a perfect finale that serves as a capstone to his journey as the villain-turned-hero. When speaking on how he felt while filming, Hiddleston described it as a wash of relief.
“I just felt this wash of relief because it had been a very meaningful experience. That sense of…the exhale.” Hiddleston explained during a recent appearance on Variety’s Actors on Actors. “It’s changed the whole course of my life, no question.”
“Our brilliant directors found me and said, ‘What do you think you might want to say?’ I remember at the end of Thor, the last thing he says is, ‘I could have done it, Father – for you. For all of us.’”
“It’s full of need, desperation, yearning for acceptance, and misguided intention. It’s full of his own broken heart. I thought, ‘I wonder if I should say that again?’ But it has a completely different meaning, which is full of love, sacrifice, selflessness, and generosity. I just felt this wash of relief because it had been a very meaningful experience.”
It seems Tom Hiddleston was as emotionally impacted by the end of Loki as every other Marvel fan! The series was a masterclass in how to evolve a character beyond the simple role they were created for, with the finale being one of the most touching moments in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What Loki’s Finale Truly Meant
Yet, the Loki finale held more importance to it than just the emotion it held. Continuing to speak on the series, Tom Hiddleston explained how he viewed the iconic final moment in terms of the character’s journey, stating that it was the end of a journey meant to heal the God of Mischief’s damage.
“In his last moment, he gets agency. He gets to decide what his life has represented up until this point. His final utterance is one of profound love and generosity. That the journey of a thousand miles has led us here. It was very satisfying and moving for me too, because it’s been such a long journey.”
“I always saw Loki as a broken soul with a shattered heart, deeply damaged by the fact that he was unwanted. He’s mischievous and playful on the surface, but it’s masking all this pain. What I’ve loved about this series is tracing my way back to that vulnerable soul and healing that damage. Showing that pain can be transformed into courage and strength.”
Tom Hiddleston hit the nail on the head when it came to what the finale meant for Loki as a character. The series saw him engage with himself (and other versions of himself) in ways that fans have never seen before in a Marvel project. While it’s a shame to see him go, it was one hell of a ride to watch him leave!
