7 Pick-Me-Ups

The other evening, Toby and I were walking home from the grocery store, when he lamented, “Mom, it’s sooooo dark and cold.” And it was true. But, I told him, “What if we reframe it, so it’s like, ‘It’s dark and cold and cozy, so we get to go home and get under blankets and watch America’s Got Talent?’” Toby beamed, and we both immediately felt better. Here are seven things we’re into as the weather grows cooler…

Crunching leaves on a walk. What is it that feels so good about stepping on crispy crunchy leaves??? I like walking around our neighborhood listening to a moody playlist or sharing juicy stories with friends. (This is the vibe we’re going for.)

Wearing a favorite sweater. How beautiful is this popcorn sweater? I’ve been wearing it with jeans on chilly days, and I love the warmth of the burnt orange color. The merino wool/cotton blend is incredibly soft, and it gets so many compliments.

Baking muffins with crumble. We made Dan Pelosi’s pumpkin cardamom recipe last week, and when I tell you these muffins were MOIST… They’re truly delicious, highly recommend.

Watching a TV series you’ve never seen. Somehow I missed The Sopranos between 1999 and 2007, but I’m making up for lost time and tearing through it right now. I adore all the complicated characters — Carmela has my heart — and the dialogue is so funny, I find myself laughing during almost every scene.

Watching America’s Got Talent with my kids. If you’re looking for a show to watch as a family, may I suggest AGT. My boys LOVE watching the contestant nervously walk on stage, then take a deep breath and bring down the house. Of course, there are also the people who are truly terrible. As Anton said, “Not gonna lie, I feel bad for the people who are cheeks but also…they’re cheeks.” Truer words.

Reading a new-to-you book. This morning, I read Pandora Sykes’s review of Laurie Colwin’s 1986 novel, Another Marvelous Thing, which follows a couple having an affair. Writes Pandora: “I’ve never read someone write about an affair the way Colwin does. The clarity is almost cleansing.” And here’s a line from the male character in the book: “She is an absolute fact of my life. When not at work, and when not with her, my thoughts rest upon the subject of her as easily as you might lay a hand on a child’s head.” I’m not a big fan of affairs, but wow those lines are romantic.

Voting early. And keeping fingers so, so tightly crossed.

What about you? Tell me what glimmers you are enjoying this fall!

P.S. A very low-key fall checklist and a fall playlist for walks/dinners/road trips.
