4 Things You Should Know Before Moving to Tennessee

Tennessee is one of the most culturally-rich places in the United States. It’s known for its music scene, the Grand Ole Opry, fantastic barbecue, and so much more. You’ll never run out of things to do in The Volunteer State.

But, if you’re considering a move to Tennessee, it’s important to know a few things ahead of time.

With that in mind, let’s look at four things you should think about before moving to TN and becoming a Vols fan.

  1. There is No Personal Income Tax

If you start a job in Tennessee, one of the first things you’ll notice is that no income tax will be taken from your paychecks. That’s a huge benefit for most people! But, if you have investments, be prepared for your dividend and interest earnings to be taxed.

  1. It’s A Great Place for Literature Lovers

Most people know Tennessee to be the music capital of the country, but it also has an incredible literary history. Cormac McCarthy was born in Tennessee, and the Sewanee Review is the oldest periodical still published in the U.S. today. You can learn a lot by researching the history of Tennessee literature, and feel connected to your favorite Southern writers.

Needless to say, it’s a wonderful place for the arts! No matter what your artistic interests may be, you can let your creativity really shine here.

  1. There Isn’t Just One Season

For some reason, many people give Tennessee a reputation of being a warm southern state all of the time. But, it actually has seasons, and even snow in the Great Smoky Mountains. One of the most beautiful times to be in the state, however, is the fall. If you think New England puts on a great color show, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen the colors Tennessee can provide!

Speaking of seasons, if you do plan on moving to this great state, it’s best to do it in the fall or winter. Yes, Tennessee does get hot, and moving in the summer can end up causing a lot of extra stress and discomfort.

  1. The Cities Are Booming

Tennessee has a lot of country charm, but there are several major cities, and they’re continuing to grow in popularity and in industry. Because of that, if you’re planning on moving to one of those major cities, you can expect heavy traffic. Unfortunately, it’s actually a bit of a problem in some of the cities. But, if you plan accordingly, you will get used to it and plan a commute that works for you.

As you can see, Tennessee isn’t simply made up of all the stereotypes people assume it to be. It’s a wonderful southern state with a rich history in music, and that should never be ignored. But, it’s so much more than that. Keep these things in mind if you’re considering a move to Tennessee, and don’t forget to do your own additional research to find the right area of Tennessee that fits your needs and wants.
