2024 F1 standings: Verstappen still dominates but rivals catching up
The eighth round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship got underway on Sunday with the Monaco Grand Prix, held on the tight streets winding their way through Monte Carlo.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, a Monaco native, won the race, helped along by his strong qualifying result. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz also made the podium, with the two Ferrari drivers split by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. McLaren’s other driver, Lando Norris, was fourth, proving yet again that Red Bull Racing’s dominance is fading.
All four drivers have delivered some serious competition this season. They have consistently fought for podium finishes and all apart from Piastri have won a race.
Reigning champion Max Verstappen is still the favorite to take home the title this season, though his performance was down in Monaco. Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez continues to deliver a mixed performance and as a result remains well off the pace of his teammate. His frequent troubles during qualifying resurfaced in Monaco where he failed to pass the first qualifying period.
Mercedes-Benz AMG, like Perez, has failed to deliver. The team, made up of drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, has struggled with the car so far this season, particularly in the high-speed corners. It’s little wonder that Hamilton plans to switch to Ferrari next year.
There’s still plenty of time for teams to make changes and for drivers to catch up with current leader Verstappen, as there are still 16 races to go in this season.
